What is the Best Age to Get SMILE LASIK?

As the eyeball grows, the degree of myopia tends to increase. During adolescence, vision may continue to worsen even without any specific reason. However, once eye growth stabilizes, myopia usually stops progressing.
Generally, after the age of 18, the progression of myopia begins to slow down, making it possible to undergo SMILE LASIK. If myopia continues to change, it is better to wait until around age 20 before having the procedure.
Does the Cornea Change with Age?
The corneal thickness is actually formed during infancy. During adolescence, there is almost no significant change in corneal thickness.
As we age, the cornea can become slightly thinner — typically noticeable in people in their 60s or 70s. However, since this age group is generally outside the typical range for SMILE surgery, these changes do not have a major impact on the procedure or its outcome.
Is It Okay to Get SMILE LASIK in your 40s?
Once you reach your 40s, it’s important to consider your age before deciding on surgery. If you prefer SMILE LASIK over presbyopia-correcting LASIK, it’s crucial to set a different target vision.
For younger patients, since their near vision is still strong, a slight hyperopic correction can be made to achieve 1.5–2.0 vision. However, for patients in their 40s, setting such a high target vision with a bit of hyperopia can make it harder to see up close. Therefore, it’s better to aim for around 0.9–1.0 vision for a more comfortable balance between near and distance vision.
