What are the Requirements to be Eligible for SMILE LASIK?
Is SMILE LASIK Possible on Eyes that have Already Undergone Surgery?
For example, while SMILE LASIK can correct myopia and astigmatism, it cannot correct hyperopia regardless of the degree. This is because SMILE is not designed to reshape the cornea in a way that addresses hyperopia.
Even for myopia and astigmatism, there are diopter limits. For myopia over -10.00 diopters cannot be corrected with SMILE LASIK. Also, astigmatism over 5.00 diopters is also beyond the correction range.
Therefore, eligibility for SMILE LASIK depends on your previous surgical history and current prescription.
What does Diopter Mean?
To explain more simply: if the cornea is too thin for LASIK or LASEK, it is also likely unsuitable for SMILE LASIK. Additionally, SMILE is not ideal for correcting hyperopia, for patients with corneal opacities, or those with other corneal diseases. In such cases, or when presbyopia and hyperopia are involved, traditional procedures like LASIK are generally more appropriate.
