How Can I Tell If My Vision Is Regressing after Vision Correction Surgery?
What Causes Vision Regression After Surgery?
If regression occurs, LASEK patients are typically re-treated with LASEK. For LASIK patients, there are two options:
1. Re-lift the original corneal flap for another LASIK procedure (if the flap is still suitable).
2. If too much time has passed or the flap is not stable, LASEK is used instead for re-treatment.
Unlike traditional methods, SMILE surgery reshapes the inner layer of the cornea, not the surface. This results in less postoperative regression, so the need for re-treatment is rare. However, if re-treatment is necessary, it can only be done with LASEK.
There is an experimental technique where a LASIK-style flap is created over the area previously created with SMILE to allow for a LASIK-like re-treatment. However, this method is still under research and not officially approved. Therefore, for now, LASEK remains the standard option for re-treating SMILE surgery.
